A twenty-year-old in a cold Helsinki apartment thinks the entire trillion-dollar architecture of machine intelligence is in bad taste. He may be the most dangerous kind of person in tech: the kind who is bored.

The twenty-year-old Helsinki student named Linus Torvalds who appears in these pages is not. He is a thought experiment given a body, a name, a bad chair, and a caffeine problem: the 1991 hacker, respawned into 2026, aimed at a different monolith. The real Linus Torvalds is fifty-six, lives in Portland, and is responsible for none of this. Everyone else in the apartment is invented. The stakes are not.
