Everyone is cramming AI into phones. Light’s new flip phone strips it all out.

The flip phone is back, and this one has a cause. Light, the Brooklyn maker of deliberately boring phones, has unveiled the Light Flip, its first clamshell and its fourth device in a decade. It costs $299 and lands with a pointed message: as Apple and Google push AI deeper into everything, Light is building the escape hatch.

A phone that leaves things out

The pitch is subtraction. The Light Flip runs LightOS, the company’s stripped-back operating system, showing white text on a black screen. There is no web browser. There is no Google Play Store. There is no social media feed to scroll.

It is not quite a dumbphone, and definitely not a smartphone. That gap is the whole point. You still get calls, texts, maps, music, podcasts, an alarm, a calculator, and a two-factor authenticator. You do not get the endless notifications that pull your eyes back...
