Something for the weekend - differing versions of reality. What can we learn from how Wikidata is navigating conflicting accounts


The culture wars are resulting in wildly disparate interpretations of what is occurring in the world. Heck, the Gulf of Mexico is now officially the Gulf of America. Climate change may or may not be real despite more floods, tornados and the fires people are observing. And rich people are exploring more creative and automated ways to reframe popular narratives with their financial interests.

So, how can we keep up with these shifting and conflicting narratives of reality? I am not entirely sure, but the Wikimedia Foundation is working to provide at least a common baseline for building consensus for the Wikidata platform which is a sister organization to Wikipedia. You might not directly go to their site, but its running silently under your Internet searches and, increasingly, generative AI experiences.
