While populist applications of generative AI create instant chatter online from CEOs and their acolytes, plus e/acc cultists, influencers, and botfarms, innovations in quantum computing tend to sneak out into the world, untouched by viral hysteria. It's the age-old race between the hare and the tortoise. Which is the best approach?

In general, quantum technologies are driven, slowly and iteratively, by patient capital, while much of the popular uptake of AI is currently propelled by surface noise and hype, and by investors who are desperate for rapid payback. Sadly, this is a distraction from all the good things that AIs might do, from their genuinely transformative applications.
