Microsoft Will Purposely Slow Down Its OneNote App on Windows 10 to Encourage Upgrades


Microsoft has announced that OneNote for Windows 10 will reach its end of support on October 14, 2025. Starting in June 2025, users of OneNote for Windows 10 will experience slower sync performance, which will affect real-time collaboration and multi-device access. From July 2025, users will begin seeing prompts and banners urging them to switch to the newer OneNote (M365) version, as reported by Windows Latest.

Microsoft says there are many reasons to migrate to the new OneNote. These include security features like Microsoft Information Protection (MIP), access to AI functionality such as Copilot, and better performance with faster sync capabilities.

The company emphasizes that there is no forced migration, and users will still have control over which app they want to use. The modern OneNote has already a Windows 11-inspired design but is not as touch-friendly as the legacy version.
