Global Restrictions Keep Huawei’s AI Chips in the Past


Huawei appears to be stumbling in its attempts to catch up to modern AI technology, thanks in large part to U.S.-led restrictions. A Bloomberg report indicates that the China-based tech company is having trouble developing its vaunted Ascend chips, which were meant to put Huawei on par with Nvidia in the AI accelerator space. Ascend APUs may not get up to speed until 2026.

To build faster Ascend chips, Huawei needs access to newer ultraviolet lithography technology. It hasn’t been able to get ahold of the tech thanks to resistance from the U.S. The U.S. has blocked access to equipment from semiconductor technology company ASML, which makes the machines chipmakers use to build processors. Huawei appears to be moving toward becoming more self-reliant. However, that means using equipment that is older or not up to the same quality standards as products from typical manufacturers.
