Xbox Strategy Could Force Sony To Delay Its All-Digital PlayStation Pivot
Sony has gotten significant pushback from the gaming community after announcing its plans to no longer support physical media releases on its PlayStation consoles beyond the end of 2027. It has led to a deluge of negative comments on social media posts and galvanized fans to call for a blackout of the gaming platform, but the company has remained steadfast regarding the decision.
The calculus might be changing, though. Eurogamer Spain shared some scuttlebutt it got ahold of during last week’s Gamescom event, including indications that Sony might be backtracking on eliminating game discs.
The driver of Sony’s potential change of heart is that its biggest competitor, Microsoft, might use physical game releases as a selling point for its next generation consoles, dubbed Project Helix.
