GUI that made History: Windows NT 4.0 arrived in retail stores on August 24, 1996, marking a significant milestone in the history of PC operating systems. Microsoft developers backported the Windows 95 interface to the NT world, although they left quite a few of the "user-friendly" features found in Win9x out of the operating system.
Microsoft released Windows NT 3.1, its first true 32-bit operating system, in 1993. The "New Technology" platform initially adopted the traditional user interface of the DOS-based Windows 3.x operating environment, but things began to change exactly 30 years ago.
In 1996, both the NT and Windows 9x technologies adopted the same interface, building a bridge between the workstation and consumer markets that would eventually bring the PC world to the unified Windows XP experience a few years...
