Why I Refuse to Sell My App’s Most Valuable Feature

Most apps decide what to charge for. I spent longer deciding what I would refuse to charge for, and that turned out to be the harder problem — because the thing worth the most money is exactly the thing that stops being worth anything the moment you can buy it.

My app records fishing catches: photo, species, place, time. Every catch is plotted on a world map. And the single most valuable piece of data in that map is someone else's exact spot.

That is the thing I will not sell. Not at any tier, not at any price.

This is a piece about what it takes to actually mean that — because "we would never do that" is a sentence, and a sentence is not a constraint.
