Wenzel Labs has launched an open-hardware, badge-style development board designed for those who want to break into the field of field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs): the bare_metal, capable of hosting three FPGA bitstreams capable of booting each other.

"bare_metal is […] the ideal platform to get started with FPGAs and HDL [Hardware Description Languages] of one or another sort. all open source," says Wenzel Labs' Matthias Wenzel of his creation. The unusually-shaped board is designed in a wearable badge-like format, with cut-outs at the top for attaching a lanyard — and a lithium-polymer battery, the same model as found in Sony's PlayStation 5 controllers, housed around the back for use on-the-go.

The heart of the board is a Lattice Semiconductor iCE40 UltraPlus iCE40UP5k FPGA, offering 5,280 four-input look-up tables...
