UK Government to Civil Servants: Save Energy, Quit Thanking Chatbots
The UK government is advising civil servants to use AI chatbots in a more energy-conscious way. But how does that work? Well, it starts with not sending "thank you" messages after a chatbot finishes a task.
A new draft memo from the UK's Government Digital Service reminds staff they "must use [AI] safely, fairly and sustainably, especially for government work." Among its suggestions is to use brief prompts and choose the smallest model that can do the required job. Smaller models usually need less computing power, which can then reduce energy consumption.
The guidance even asks staff to consider whether they need AI at all. From this angle, government employees are expected to consider AI's environmental impact, compare it with non-AI tools, and pick the best option for the job.
