This VR System Doesn't Need a Headset
Virtual reality headsets have improved dramatically over the years, but there is no getting around the fact that you still have to strap a bunch of hardware to your face. Larger displays and optics can provide a wider field of view and better image quality, but they also add weight. Researchers at Kyushu University are taking a very different approach to this problem. Rather than trying to make VR headsets lighter and more comfortable, they developed a virtual reality system that doesn't require a headset at all.
A headset-free approach
The experimental system instead places the optical hardware in front of the user and creates a stereoscopic image that appears to float in midair. Everything is integrated into a rotating chair, allowing a user to simply sit down and enter a virtual environment without putting on or calibrating any wearable hardware.
