This Jumping Cube Performs a Physics-Defying Stunt

We filter everything we see through the lens of our own experience and knowledge about the world. If you see a flame, you recognize that it will be hot. If you see a cube — say a standard D6 die — tossed onto a table, you know that it will come to rest on one of its faces. But your intuition can fail you, which is exactly what The Tinkering Techie’s jumping cube was designed to demonstrate.

This is a cube about five inches to a side, with a kind of foot on one side. It rests on that foot. When activated, the foot quickly extends and launches the cube into the air. What you expect to see is the cube tumbling through the air, landing on the table, bouncing around a bit, and finally coming to rest on one of its sides. But that isn’t what happens.
