Anyone who has spent time in a workshop knows the feeling. You need a particular resistor, screw, bearing, or connector, and the bin where it is supposed to be is either empty or nearly so. Maybe someone forgot to reorder it. Maybe there are more somewhere else. Or it could be that the inventory database says there are still 150 in stock because nobody remembered to update the count after taking the last handful.

Inventory software has been around for decades, but most of it shares the same weakness: it depends on people doing the bookkeeping. Slant Tech's new warecache ecosystem takes a different approach by putting the inventory system into the storage bins themselves. Rather than expecting users to count parts and enter quantities manually, the hardware continuously measures what is actually sitting in each bin and feeds that information to a central server.
