The New Sovol M1D Combines IDEX with Tool Changing
The hobbyist 3D printing community has been taking multi-material printing seriously for at least a decade now and has experimented with a lot of different solutions. For a while, IDEX (independent dual-extrusion) setups seemed like the best choice — but that’s only two materials. Today, tool changing certainly feels like the optimal solution. So, Sovol went ahead and put both IDEX and tool changing into their new M1D 3D printer.
I’ll admit that I thought this was a strange idea at first. If you have tool changing, why do you need IDEX? But the Sovol M1D has raised nearly $3 million on Kickstarter already, so clearly people find the idea compelling.
