There's a moment in a phase transition almost nobody pays attention to, because nothing looks like it's happening. Water sitting at exactly zero degrees isn't frozen and isn't liquid. It's holding both at once, balanced so close to the edge that one more degree of cold tips the whole thing over. The molecules haven't moved yet. The old rules still technically apply. But they won't for much longer, and nothing about looking at the water in that instant tells you which side you're on. You're standing right in between.
