NVIDIA opens up on Hugging Face bid
It’s been rumored for a few weeks, but NVIDIA’s move on Hugging Face is now out in the open with a $12.9 billion bid for the AI model developer platform, a move that represents a big vote of faith in the open model movement.
Founded in 2016 by French entrepreneurs Clement Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf, Hugging Face as part of NVIDIA’s empire would provide a useful tool to mitigate potential slowdown in demand for the firm’s chips as closed frontier model firms look to dabble in the hardware space.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang pledges that the firm will scale the platform, strengthen its infrastructure, and expand user access to its models, but will also ensure that it remains “an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem”. In an interview with CNBC, he said:
