The importance of being human (2/2) - a design for living, but only if we can look properly beyond the AI stack to understand the people interacting with it

A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that more than three-quarters of respondents patients had brought up the use of AI for mental health and emotional support and many reported benefits from those interactions.

However, many also brought up concerns about dependency and distorted thinking resulting from this trend. That then begs the question not whether AI can help make people more productive, but whether we can design and deploy AI that genuinely helps people flourish. In other words, what does it take to ensure that AI actually helps its human masters and mistresses thrive?

That was a point raised by Dr. Arthur Evans, CEO of the Association, at a notable side session on the fringes of the recent Salesforce Dreamforce conference in San Francisco. His starting point is that a lot of today’s conversations around AI fall into one of two camps:
