Despite the flurry of return to office (RTO) mandates, particularly among large tech firms, the number of digital nomads on company books appears to be on the rise. Around 18.5 million Americans, or 12% of the total workforce, are currently operating in this way, a jump of 153% since 2019, according to a report by MBO Partners. (This appears to be a peculiarly US phenomenon. Elsewhere, the number of digital nomads is much smaller. In the UK, for instance, they account for only 165,000 people, or about 0.5% of the overall working population.)
Most prolific in the tech sector, the majority of digital nomads are now employed (11.2 million) as opposed to being independent workers. To explain this jump, despite an initial fall when RTO policies were first being rolled out, the MBO study says:
