Google has been quietly but aggressively replacing Google Assistant with Gemini inside your house. The Spring 2026 update to Google Home brought along Gemini 3.1, and with it, something genuinely new: the ability to chain together complex, multi-step instructions in a single voice command. Then, in late April, Google went a step further, rolling out "continued conversation" so you don't even have to say "Hey Google" between follow-up questions. The microphone stays open, the context carries over, and it's supposed to feel less like barking commands at a device and more like talking to someone who actually gets what you mean.
