But enterprise paranoia that AI companies might be using the proprietary data their customers share with models to learn how to compete with them was certainly given a big boost this week.
Effectively OpenAI’s announcement that its AI had solved a hitherto intractable mathematical problem was initially overshadowed by questions about whether it really had. Or at least whether it had done so wholly on its own.
Because two mathematicians working on a related problem had been using OpenAI’s Codex to check their work — and so when OpenAI subsequently announced its own breakthrough, one of them, Tristan Buckmaster, initially expressed surprise at the degree of overlap.
