Shopping for a new laptop has always meant sorting through plenty of specs, but AI has added a new layer of jargon to decipher: AI PC, Copilot+, NPU and TOPS appear alongside familiar specs like memory and storage. If you can already use Microsoft Copilot on a regular PC, what do you actually get by buying a laptop with the Copilot+ label?
The answer isn’t simply “more AI.” Copilot+ PCs have dedicated hardware that lets certain AI features run directly on the laptop, which can change how you handle everything from translated captions and video calls to finding files. But some benefits will matter much more than others, depending on how you use your computer.
