Kroger sets up separate e-commerce business unit as its omni-channel focus continues despite some turbulent times


It’s pretty safe to say that US grocery behemoth Kroger hasn’t been having the best of years so far. Back at the end of 2024, its long-planned and much-scrutinised planned merger with Albertsons collapsed, resulting in recriminations and legal actions looming. Meanwhile last month, long-standing CEO Rodney McMullen abruptly quit following a ten day internal company investigation that found that his “personal conduct” was “inconsistent with Kroger’s policy on business ethics”.

On the upside, the firm’s financial performance continues to hold up. Kroger reported a solid $2.7 billion profit on $147.1 billion of sales in 2024. Of that total, some $13 billion came from e-commerce activities with digital revenues currently running at around 11% year-on-year growth rates.
