Stefan Bond's ATX Conversion Kit Brings Apple's Classic "Cheesegrater" Mac Pro Bang Up to Date
Mechanical engineer Stefan Bond has a lot of love for the design of Apple devices of the past, but acknowledges that the hardware inside is maybe a little out-of-date — and so has designed a conversion kit that allows modern ATX-standard PC hardware to slot straight into the 2019 Mac Pro 7,1 chassis, affectionately known as the "Cheesegrater."
"The 7,1 Mac Pro 'Cheesegrater' is one of the most distinctive desktop enclosures ever made," Bond argues, in a field in which Apple is strongly represented. "But the original internal hardware is proprietary and tied to Apple’s platform. This project is designed to change that. The goal is simple. Keep the enclosure. Keep the character. Replace the proprietary platform with standard, upgradeable PC hardware."
