Gravity gloves on, I approach a dark passage. I can hear alien grunts. The voice on my headset tells me to watch out for “barnacles,” and I know to look up and shoot ceiling-hugging aliens with the gun in my controller-gripping hand. I’m in VR, playing Half-Life Alyx again. It’s a game I once played six years ago by rigging a VR headset to a laptop PC and installing room sensors in my pandemic home office.

Now I’m playing it on a standalone VR headset, no PC needed at all.
