Something for the weekend - why we need to appreciate the vision of human intelligence from AI maven Demis Hassabis

At a time when the ambitions and worldviews of AI billionaires can leave a very nasty taste in the mouth, it’s good to go into the weekend with a palate-cleansing vision from DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis.

As expounded at Cannes Lions, Hassabis uses much of the same terminology as others, but his articulation comes across as far more rooted in human intelligence than the artificial counterpart.

Take that holiest of Holy Grails, Artificial General Intelligence, as a case in point. For Hassabis, the definition in play here is that of a system that exhibits “all the limited capabilities humans have” and that’s an important distinction, he attests:
