Amazon and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos believes that robots and AI will create a labour shortage, rather than sweep aside vast numbers of human workers. He expressed the view at the VivaTech Paris expo in the French capital this week, saying:

I know there's a lot of concern that many people have, including many smart people, that AI is going to make humans redundant and so on. I totally disagree with this point of view. And I think, in fact, AI is going to create a labor shortage.

That was a bold claim for the world’s fourth richest man to make. The tech sector has shed over 150,000 jobs so far in 2026 – that’s 907 people a day, according to real-time industry research provider TrueUp – and it lost over a quarter of a million workers last year (674 a day).
