Paris prosecutors open criminal probe into smart glasses used to film women

The Paris prosecutor’s office has launched at least one criminal inquiry into sexual harassment allegations linked to smart glasses, Reuters reports, which is the strongest indication so far that France intends to have covert street filming dealt with by the criminal courts and not merely by the privacy regulator.

The issue involves a trend on social media in which men who wear glasses with cameras go up to women in public, film them without their permission, and then upload the videos online.

The office has not provided any figure regarding the number of complaints it has received, nor has it stated whether anyone has been identified, Reuters said on Friday.

Meanwhile, France’s data protection authority has addressed the issue from the other side: in June, it issued a warning urging people to stay vigilant, saying cameras and microphones built into ordinary-looking eyewear can capture individuals almost invisibly.
