NIST NCCoE Mobile Driver’s Licenses Use Case #2 Update
The NIST National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE) is hosting a webinar on August 27, 2026 to provide an update on the Mobile Driver’s License project, including an overview of the forthcoming reference architecture for using mDLs for citizen-to-government services, which will be released in the coming weeks.
The NCCoE is strengthening trust in online identity by accelerating the secure adoption of mDLs to verify identities. While the first use case was focused on the use of mDLs in financial services, the second project use case will demonstrate the use of mDLs to verify citizens’ identities when accessing government services.
In the coming weeks, the mDL team is releasing a reference architecture developed in partnership with the General Services Administration (Login.gov), which outlines an mDL-driven identity process designed to help eliminate the need to photograph certain identity documents, improving identification success rates, while delivering a better user experience.
