India Directs Google to Shut Down Firebase Accounts Over Banking Scams
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has issued directives to Google to shut down hundreds of accounts and databases hosted on its Firebase app development platform. The enforcement action follows the identification of a systematic fraud pattern exploiting Google’s cloud infrastructure to impersonate financial institutions and compromise Android devices.
Exploitation of Cloud Infrastructure
Investigators uncovered that cybercriminals were misusing Firebase to host deceptive phishing interfaces and backend databases. The malicious setups targeted mobile users by mimicking prominent Indian lenders, including State Bank of India (SBI), ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank.
Scammers lured victims with promotional offers, such as reward redemptions, credit card limit upgrades, or fake government benefit distributions under programs like PM-KISAN. Once users clicked the links, malicious Android applications infected their devices to capture sensitive credentials, one-time passwords (OTPs), and credit card details, sending the stolen data directly to Firebase databases controlled by the perpetrators.
