I found the parry-focused swordplay of Valor Mortis incredibly satisfying, but this clash of Souls-like and first-person adventure isn't as sharp as it could be

The snappy and satisfying parry-focused combat of Valor Mortis will surely delight fans of Sekiro and Lies of P who are looking for a ‘Souls-like’ experience from a new perspective. But while it builds on that core with some inventive set pieces and a gloomy atmosphere, the restrictions of the first-person view make some encounters clunky or irritating, and an obsession with trickery is grating.

Reasons to buy

  • +Tight and satisfying combat
  • +Inventive and varied set pieces
  • +Gruesome world and creature designs

Reasons to avoid

  • -Some clunkiness with the first-person view
  • -Some dull and frustrating environments
  • -Too reliant on traps and trickery
  • -Not a huge variety of weapons and powers
