Humanist in the loop (2/2) - in a world in AI chaos, why it's up to you to make responsible choices!
The first part of my conversationwith writer, tech consultant, public speaker and avowed humanist Kate O’Neill, centered on the commercial cynicism behind some vendors’ attempts to anthropomorphize AI. By doing so, they absolve themselves of blame for chatbots’ errors, while still, mysteriously, claiming the credit for their successes.
It's ‘the house always wins’, industrialized at global scale. But the knock-on effect of believing that chatbots and Large Language Models (LLMs) are our sentient, super-intelligent co-pilots and friends – rather than probabilistic pattern-matching algorithms trained on data scraped off the Web – can be disastrous.
French researcher Daniel Charlotin has noted that fake, hallucinated caselaw has been presented in over 1,600 court cases worldwide, a figure that has since risen to 1,761. More, there have been several examples of renowned services giants publishing fake AI citations in upscale enterprise reports (see diginomica, passim).
