Scientists can now talk to raw genetic code using ordinary English, and it doesn’t take a supercomputer to listen.

AI platform Hugging Face on Thursday announced Carbon-X, an open-weight, 14.8-billion-parameter language model that lets researchers chat directly with DNA.

Built in collaboration with Italy’s University of Naples Federico II and China’s Zhongguancun Academy, the tool merges genomic sequences and natural language into a single system, allowing scientists to assess mutations without proprietary cloud platforms.

The release could make AI-assisted genomic research more accessible to laboratories with limited computing budgets. But while Hugging Face reports competitive benchmark results and substantially lower inference costs, the model still has limitations that prevent it from being treated as a clinical diagnostic tool.

A conversational leap for genomics

Unlike earlier biology toolsthat output raw numbers or require specialized programming pipelines, Carbon-X operates like an everyday chatbot. Researchers built it by taking the open Qwen3-14B...
