How the Ottawa Police Service publishes and automatically updates key safety data the public can trust

Use of geospatial technology and open data is proving central to the ability of Ottawa Police Service (OPS) to work with citizens to offer a safer and more inclusive urban environment.

The result, claims the organization, is that the public of Canada’s capital is increasingly turning to OPS to understand possible risks in their vicinity and build better overall community safety.

This is via a public-facing open data portal, the Community Safety Data Portal (CSDP), which actually goes back in its simplest form to 2008, but which has been massively upgraded and expanded since 2022.

This now holds two million records across maps, dashboards, and open datasets - and which has seen a 14% increase in visits between June 2024 and April 2026, thanks to the new easy-to-use interface.

The most popular part of the portal, ‘The Crime Map (YTD),’ now automatically refreshes every morning.
