HHS unveils efforts to speed up clinical trials with AI

The department announced a broader multi-agency effort to support U.S. clinical trial infrastructure this past summer.
The Health and Human Services Department announced Tuesday a program and three projects aiming to speed up clinical trials with artificial intelligence, advanced computational models, real-time analysis and other technologies.
The Simulation-augmented, Real-time Platform Adaptive Seamless Trials — or SURPASS — program seeks to create AI-powered platforms that continuously and adaptively support clinical trial designs, according to an HHS press release. The platform will enable “earlier, smarter decision making that will help speed effective drugs to patients,” according to the release.
The department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, or ARPA-H, will host two informational sessions before a SURPASS solution summary is due on Nov. 30.
