The first wave of enterprise generative AI was obsessed with chatbots. That made sense. A chat window is familiar. It is easy to demo. It gives teams a fast way to show that a large language model can answer questions, summarize documents, and sound useful in front of executives. The problem is that most businesses do not run on conversations. They run on workflows.
A customer support issue does not end when a bot gives an answer. Someone may need to check an order, apply a refund rule, update a CRM record, create a ticket, notify a warehouse, or escalate the case to a specialist. A procurement question may involve policy lookup, vendor scoring, approval routing, and audit logging. A healthcare admin task may need document extraction, validation, compliance checks, and human review. That is where chatbot thinking starts to feel too small.
