If you've sat in an enterprise AI governance conversation in the last 12 months, you've almost certainly heard the phrase "human-in-the-loop" used to mean four different things in the same meeting. Sometimes it means someone reviewing every AI output before it goes out. It might mean someone empowered to intervene if the automation misbehaves, or could be a set of guardrails written into the workflow logic before the AI ever runs. Let's be fair - sometimes it means whatever the vendor in the room needs it to mean in that particular sentence.

Alteryx's 2026 State of the Data Analyst researchidentified the resulting confusion in a single set of numbers. 46% of data analysts said they preferred a model where AI agents required human approval before executing tasks.
