Data Centers Can Learn from New Jersey’s Marshes and Warehouses

As opposition to data center development spreads across the country, the industry is reaching for familiar tools: more project briefings, more public meetings, more fact sheets, more economic-impact claims.
Those tools have their place. But they miss a deeper point for communities. How much agency do each of us individually and collectively have in what our communities are, and will be? And ultimately, more and more people feel they have less agency in general, and regarding data centers as a physical representation of big tech power in particular.
As Nathaniel Whittemore of the AI Daily Brief pointed out succinctly this month – however much we’ve become allergic to contrastive negations – data center development is becoming less of a business issue, and more of a democratic issue. And the folks trying to get them built are having trouble making that adjustment.
