Colorful Tattoos That Monitor Your Heart and Brain

Wearable health sensors can tell us a lot about what is happening inside the human body, but there is one problem — people actually have to wear them. Traditional adhesive patches have a tendency to peel away or become uncomfortable with time. Aside from that, they look like medical devices that many people would rather not have stuck to their skin all day.

Engineers at Penn State think there is a better approach. They have developed a colorful conductive ink that can be painted directly onto the skin in any shape or design, creating washable electronic tattoos that monitor heart, muscle, and brain activity with greater comfort and accuracy than existing wearables. The technology could enable new applications in areas ranging from robotic prosthetic control to long-term health monitoring.
