Build Your Own Retro Handheld With the New $29 Arduboy Jr
It seems like all the best things get a “junior” version — there’s Jr. Pac-Man, the Atari 2600 Jr., and the IBM PCjr, for instance. Now Arduboy is following suit with the brand-new Arduboy Jr. Unlike previous releases by the company, the Arduboy Jr is not a complete game console. Instead, it is a development board that was created to make building your own Arduboy handheld as easy as possible.
For years, DIY Arduboy builders have typically started with an Arduino Pro Micro before working through a series of extra steps to transform it into a compatible handheld. That has meant flashing a special bootloader with external hardware, adding serial flash storage, handling level shifting, and then figuring out how to load the Arduboy game library. Arduboy Jr packages all of that work into a single board so makers can focus on designing the hardware they actually want to build.
