Anthropic CEO Proposes External Evaluators And Capability-Based Checks As AI Systems Become More Autonomous
The debate around slowing artificial intelligence development is taking a different shape at Anthropic. CEO Dario Amodei is no longer arguing for a broad pause in AI progress. Instead, he is proposing that the industry slow the pace of capability gains enough to give safety, testing and oversight mechanisms time to catch up.
In a September 2026 essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier,” Amodei argues that the problem is no longer simply whether AI companies are investing in safety. The harder question is whether those safeguards can keep pace with increasingly capable systems.
“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models. Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain,” he wrote.
