AI is accused of being built on unpaid intellectual labor, but human intelligence is also built on unpaid intellectual inheritance. The difference is not that humans create from nothing and machines steal.
The word “labor” makes it sound like the problem is new, and like someone is simply making others work for them in a class-war frame. But most of what shapes intelligence does not reach us as a paid transaction. It reaches us as inheritance: language, logic, taste, stories, metaphors, techniques, formulas, styles, and arguments passed through generations without individual attribution.
AI did not invent this mechanism. It exposed it.
