AI Won't Replace VFX Artists. It's Replacing Who Can Afford Them.

The real disruption in visual effects isn’t fewer artists, it’s the end of the studio’s exclusive grip on who gets to hire one.

Two months into production on Lost Garden, my animated pilot, I priced a single VFX shot: a stone courtyard dissolving into light as a barrier gives way. The quote from a freelance compositor came back higher than my entire remaining budget for the episode, for one shot, delivered over three weeks. I built a version of that same shot myself over a weekend, using AI video tools, with no compositing background and no team behind me. That isn’t proof AI is replacing VFX artists. AI is not erasing the craft of high-end visual effects, it is erasing the exclusivity of who gets to commission that craft, and those are two different problems, not one.
