Agility as a pillar of sovereignty - learnings from Bull's ambitious factory upgrade to bolster European AI
Bull has cut the ribbon on the first phase of a major overhaul of its Angers factory, where it builds supercomputers, AI infrastructure and enterprise servers. In some ways, not much has changed since the plant opened in 1963. It still turns out large computers in similarly sized racks and boxes.
But a lot is different. The racks and boxes now hold NVIDIA and AMD GPUs rather than discrete transistors and magnetic-core memory. The factory floor and workstations can be re-configured for new designs. The site will soon have 1,500 more trees (one for every French employee), more than 3,500 solar panels on the roof, and waste heat that will eventually help warm the neighbors. The new building will double production capacity and improve productivity by 30%.
