A Cool New Way to Make Custom LED Display

You’ve probably noticed that many consumer electronics devices have LED displays — not LED matrix displays or OLED displays, but displays with various icons and indicators illuminated by LEDs. They look nice and they’re very readable at a glance, but you almost never see them in custom builds. That’s a shame, so Maker’s Fun Duck came up with a technique (and a Python tool) anyone can use to make custom LED displays.

Displays like these are actually very simple, with four key elements. First, there is a PCB with LEDs that can be controlled individually or in groups. Second, there is a some kind of divider to prevent light bleed. Third, there is a diffuser to help even out the light. And fourth, there is a mask layer with windows for each icon, pictograph, or segment.

All of those elements are things that many hobbyists and makers can fabricate...
