A $50 Feather-Compatible FPGA for Makers
An FPGA can be one of the most important tools in a maker's toolbox, but getting started can be difficult. Development boards are often expensive, use unusual expansion connectors, or require proprietary programming hardware and enormous software packages. Chris, an FPGA engineer, came up with a solution called the Crystal Board. It is a new FPGA development board designed to be affordable while still offering enough power to be useful for serious projects.
The Crystal Board is built around a Lattice CrossLink-NX FPGA, specifically the LIFCL-17-8SG72C with 17,000 LUTs. Chris chose the device partly because it comes in a QFN-72 package that can be soldered by hand, unlike the BGA packages commonly used by larger FPGAs. There is also an upgrade path to a 40,000-LUT version for projects that need more programmable logic.
