$30 Switch Game Is Unplayable Forever After Cloud Shutdown, Even in Single-Player Mode
Fans of the Aliens: Fireteam Elite game are up in arms over it being effectively bricked on Nintendo Switch just three years after its 2023 release.
The $30 game—$60, if you bought the "Ultimate" edition—was a "cloud-only" release, so it required online server access to play, even in single-player mode. After the server shutdown in August, the game is dead on the original Switch, despite the sequel coming to the Switch 2 later this year.
Nintendo games that use cloud streaming are effectively not played on the local console at all. This isn't like DRM online check-in; the game is actually streamed from a remote server, which is useful when the user's Switch hardware isn't up to the task. But it means that when that server goes dark, it doesn't just take multiplayer with it—it takes the entire game.
