YouTube picture-in-picture mode seems to be broken on Android and iOS, and Google is 'actively investigating'

YouTube picture-in-picture (PiP) mode on Android and iOS is one of the most useful features the app offers — available to all users now, Premium or otherwise — but a widespread bug seems to have broken the functionality on phones.
As reported by 9to5Google, there are multiple reports of PiP mode failing to activate when the YouTube app is exited. The audio keeps playing in the background, but there's no sign of the small video overlay.
We've had mixed experiences with this on the TechRadar team: for some it's working fine, for others it's broken. However, it's definitely a genuine problem for some users at least, because Google has acknowledged there is a bug.
