When you hear the term “online footprint,” you probably think of social media posts and purchases from sites such as Amazon or Best Buy, but there’s a lot more to it. Every action you’ve ever taken online -- from Google searches to browsing random websites and posting on social media -- generates data, which comprises your online footprint. If you spend a lot of time online, your digital footprint is likely bigger than you think; a full 60% of internet users have more than 12 exposed points of personal data.

These data points can include personal information, such as your mailing address and marital status -- and may be available to a wide range of entities, from corporations to government authorities. Cybercriminals can target these companies to steal this data, too, with 61% of Americans in a 2024 digital privacy surveystating that their personal data had been breached...
