Your Next Health Tracker Could Be a Piece of String
Smartwatches and fitness bands have made it easier than ever to keep tabs on our health, but they still have one thing in common: they're devices that we have to remember to put on. Researchers at Tufts University are working toward a future where that may no longer be necessary. They have developed a new class of thread-based electronics that can be sewn directly into clothing, wrapped around the body, or used as medical sutures, allowing health-monitoring circuits to become almost as flexible and unobtrusive as the fabric itself.
Unlike conventional flexible electronics, which are built on thin, flat substrates, these new integrated circuits are formed directly on textile threads. This allows them to bend, twist, coil, stretch, and conform to complex three-dimensional shapes while remaining fully functional.
